May 2001 - Mayor Daley's "Bike to Work Day"
While all the bike commuters were milling around in front of the Picasso statue, this guy showed me his elaborate ham radio outfit. He told me he could talk with truckers on the Dan Ryan even through all the metal buildings downtown. He had a dozen wires running the length of the top tube of the bike, with large batteries for the radio kept in the plastic case on the back rack and a big lock on top. Note the motorcycle windscreen. I wouldn't be surprised if the headlight and turn signals are hooked up as well. He'd even rigged up a reinforced kickstand to support all the weight of the equipment.
